Laurentide Oysters

Tucked away in the pristine waters of Barnstable Harbor, protected by small islands and beautiful Sandy Neck beach, is where Laurentide Oysters grow.

Laurentide Oysters gets its name from the geologic history of Cape Cod. The last continental ice sheet, named Laurentide after the Laurentian region of Canada in which it first formed, advanced and retreated, scraping the earth and moving bedrock and sediment under its massive weight. After landing in its final resting spot the ice sheet melted, revealing moraines, or large masses of earth, sand and sediment that are now marked by the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

As the ice sheet melted, the sea levels rose. Land that was left above sea level began to evolve, marshes and forests began to grow, wildlife began to populate the area, and the distinctive and memorable shape of The Cape that we know today began to form, carved out by the wind and the sea.

All this to say, Cape Cod is home to a unique marine ecosystem that provides the perfect environment for growing and farming oysters. The sediment in the region, coupled with the swift currents and tides, give Laurentide Oysters their unique, sweet flavor.
